Recovery march From Addiction Today, July issue...

JOIN THE RECOVERY MARCH ON 26 SEPTEMBER

Action on Addiction recently hosted a seminar presented by Bill White, a leading advocate of recovery communities. Jacquie Johnston-Lynch of Sharp Liverpool was so “enamoured and motivated” by White’s work that she has begun practical steps of developing a vibrant recovery community in Liverpool. This is coming to fruition this year.

“Liverpool has a huge treatment system which offers huge choice. This sometimes has its drawbacks as it is hard to navigate, but its strength is that there are now real options on the table for people,” she explained.

“Organisations such as Park View, Spider, Independence Initiatives, Alternatives and Together Women all offer great services – so much so, that it is now recognised that Liverpool is leading the way in terms of what has been described by National Treatment Agency regional director Mark Gilman as a ‘recovery revolution’.”

The fellowships of Narcotics and Cocaine Anonymous are growing at a rapid rate in Liverpool, even faster than in London, per head of population. Sharp Liverpool’s building is home to over 20 meetings a week outside of treatment programme hours.

Thanks for the inspiration!

In Excess TV and The Addiction Recovery Foundation, publisher of Addiction Today, will be working with many organisations to hold a Recovery Rally in Westminster, in May 2010, to coincide with the UK/European Symposium on Addictive Disorders - and the General Election.

I've participated in a number of marches and rallies in the past where I've always been demonstrating against some injustice that I saw happening in the world. Although worthwhile causes, I never felt wholeheartedly connected to them as I did marching for recovery last night in Liverpool. For once I was celebrating my life and others in recovery rather than fighting it and everything else that I saw going wrong in the world. It was truly a liberating experience and the connection I felt with people last night will stay with me for a long time.
