DRUG OFFENDERS: DETAILS WILL BE MADE PUBLIC

A rogues' gallery of drug offenders has been launched as part of crackdown on drugs and "drug tourism" in Lambeth. The move is part of a campaign to kill of the borough's reputation as an easy place to buy drugs - this was the first place to take the failed 'softly softly' approach to cannabis.

Now anyone convicted of selling - and buying - drugs in Lambeth could find their names and photographs on the council's website. The first offenders will be on the internet this month, where they could be seen by employers, family and friends.

"We want people to come ehre for the right reasons, not to buy or sell drugs," explained council leader Steve Reed. "They ruin life for the wider community."

The move is backed by a poster campaign at Brixton tube station and on buses across Lambeth. The posters will highlight offences and the measures that can be used to cut drugs, as well as wider repercussions for people who get caught.

The policy is part of a raft of measures to reduce drugs crime, through both tough enforcement action and getting problem drug users into treatment. Lambeth says that over 1,300 drug and alcohol users are currently being treated. Figures show improvement, with Lambeth in the top four London boroughs for crime reduction. Reed hopes that people will now visit the area which has "so much to offer, from vibrant food and clothes markets to famous entertainment venues".
