POLICE CHIEFS WARN OF CRYSTAL METH EPIDEMIC

The Association of Chief Police Officers warned [15 February] that the UK could suffer an epidemic of methamphetamine addiction within two years. A class-A drug, it triggers violence and could be "as big a problem as crack cocaine". ACPO revealed that 19 crystal meth 'factories' have been raided in the past two years.

Addiction Today published an article on methamphetamines in 2005. Highlights were:

  • Despite claims that only 5% of people dependent on it can recover, research showed over 60% success rates from appropriate treatment
  • It is not necessary to design completely new treatment approaches for methamphetamine dependency - the focus should be on enhancing existing treatment with supplemental services.

We will be republishing the article on this website later in February. Watch this space.
